If you change direction…

Don’t worry about the title…nothing profound is going on, but on Friday, I was reminded that sometimes, if you do things slightly differently, if you change direction, you see things from a whole new perspective.

On Friday, I got my long run in. It was hot here last week, so I drove over to Half Moon Bay during pre-school hours to run in the blissfully cool temperatures by the ocean. I headed north up the coastal trail only to find the bridge has collapsed and I could go no further, so I headed south instead for the first time ever. I have no idea why I haven’t run that way before but it was GORGEOUS! A total revelation. I stopped a LOT to take photographs, it was just too nice not to!

Fairly quickly, the paved trail turned into dirt trails and stretched out over a flat, scrubby area over the bluffs. It reminded me so much of the UK! The trails were unsigned and wove around all over the place so I got a little lost, but it was so much fun I didn’t mind at all. The bluffs area ended at the oh-so-unbluffy Ritz-Carlton hotel so I ran through their grounds and out through their golf-course a little further south, before retracing my steps back. 12 miles in 1.54 at 9.30 pace. I shall be heading south again!

UK or California? Hard to tell.
Cliffs, beach…all pretty gorgeous
It is pretty gorgeous here

On Sunday morning, I joined my friends from church for a pre-church easy run at Sawyer Camp Trail next to Crystal Springs Reservoir. Since I ran with them last, my girls have got much faster…it wasn’t as easy as I expected. I LOVE watching my friends make progress!!  4 miles in the books.

That afternoon, we joined the Husband in his Ironman Training. His plan called for 11 miles so we headed back to Sawyer Camp Trail, with the bike and the weehoo. He ran and we cycled along next to him ‘encouraging’ him, handing him water and snacks and generally entertaining him. It was fun! I have mixed views on the weehoo (I’ll do a few more rides before doing a review) but we had a good day.

In other scenes this weekend:

  • We spent nearly TWO hours in Sports Basement buying triathlon gear for the Husband who has his first race this coming weekend. I had to sit for the whole time and hold my sleeping child. Got to be honest, I loved it. He never sleeps on me any more, it made my day.

  • We then went and played some mini-golf which was the most fun thing ever.
No-one's entirely sure who won.

We are now into May – how did that happen? This is the Dude’s final month at pre-school and June, July and August are going to be pretty ridiculously busy. I’m not sure how much running I’m going to get in, so I’ve set myself the target of running 120 miles in May.

The score so far? 16/120!

I’ll echo everyone else to say that HMB looks beautiful! I totally agree with you about how a random change of direction or starting at different location in a familiar route can bring a completely different perspective. I used to hate the West Shore Trail at Lake Chabot until I realized it was because it was always the last bit of my run when I was super tired. When I finally ran it on fresh legs, I was like, “Wow, this is great!” Haha, silly me.

Good luck to the Husband this Saturday! Will you be live blogging the event? Will he guest blog? Does he know he has so many supporters?? You two can be the Jesse Thomas/Lauren Fleshman of the Bay Area!

Oh this made me chortle so loudly! You may call me your #sisterhero. Clearly they named Jude the Dude after my Dude!! I will do some tweeting and some instagramming I expect! I’m so excited! The Husband has been surprised and quite touched at how many people have wished him luck!!
