A (very busy) week in my shoes…April 5th

So much excitement this week! So many exclamation marks to share.

Firstly, we booked a holiday! We’re off to Hawaii next month for the first time…a few days on Oahu (we want to see Pearl Harbour and the valley where they filmed ‘Lost’) and then the rest of the day on Kauai. I am VERY excited. We’ve travelled a lot lately but not actually had a proper family holiday since the Dude was born. It’s going to be brilliant.

So even if I wasn’t motivated to run (which I was), the thought of bikini season got me working out harder than ever!!

So I did some exercise this week after a lazy weekend.

Saturday: Jillian Michaels 30 day Shred Level 2 and 2 mile ‘hike’

But you knew about that.

Monday: Treadmill 6 miles.

My hate/hate relationship with the treadmill is softening slightly. I ran this evening and definitely enjoyed the sweatfest that resulted. I’ve decided to do a treadmill run every Monday of this training cycle for SF 2nd Half.  I did five miles of intervals and one final mile of blissful easy plodding! I feel like the intervals are making me (mildly) more comfortable at faster paces.

Two new things on this run.

1) I wore my new Nikes for the first time with a ProFoot insole. No shin pain, although I iced when I got home (watching the new series of Game of Thrones, yeah baby!). They felt good.

2) And I also listened to podcasts for the first time during a run and it was a revelation. I didn’t get half as bored. I listened to two podcasts by Another Mother Runner and I really enjoyed them. Listening to an interview with a lady who was diagnosed with MS 10 years ago and who went on to run the five major world marathons…that’s enough to make you suck up the treadmill blues and keep going!

Wednesday: Jillian Level 2 and 3 miles walking on the treadmill

I cannot deny it…Jillian Level 2 kicks my bum!! I sweat like it’s going out of fashion. And then, in the evening, I walked 3 miles at 4mph on our new, ridiculously enormous treadmill-that-only-goes-at-4mph. It was a surprisingly decent work out.

Going so fast my legs are blurry

Thursday: 6 miles

Yep, I was supposed to do this on Wednesday but couldn’t get out of bed early enough so I swapped the days around. As a result, I had to run in the rain. (Rain? In April? In the Bay Area?). It wasn’t too bad actually but I dressed for rain in the UK and was too hot and too bulky! When I removed my cycling waterproof jacket for the last mile, I felt liberated and I think I ran much faster at that point. 6.2 miles in 58.30 at a 9.26 pace.

So all in all…a pretty rocking week. And I’ve got exciting running plans tomorrow morning too!

    Very exciting about Hawaii!! Enjoy!

I’ll have to check out the podcast – always looking for new ones to listen to. The running one I’ve been getting into lately is called Marathon Training Academy. http://marathontrainingacademy.com/

Thanks for the recommendation. People also rave about This American Life but I have to be honest, I have no idea what it is. I really liked the whole podcast thing though, it made treadmill time much less dull!

  4. Yay, a rain run. For some reason I really love those! I had a couple of good ones this week and just couldn’t get enough of it, until I was huddled and shivering under my covers afterwards. But during was amazing! Glad you are making friend with your tready too!

Rain runs in the UK are so grim…so cold and often windy and just bone-chilling. I dread them there. So I always overdress for rain runs here where it’s so less brutal!!

  5. Oh and amazing that you are taking a family trip to Hawaii! I want to go to there!

We would kick ourselves if we left CA and hadn’t visited, it’s so far from the UK we would never travel that far! We’re excited.
