2013: Race Plan

I’d like to talk about the amount of running I’ve done in the past week…but it adds up to a big fat zero. I could quote sickness, travel, MURDEROUS jet-lag and frantic Christmas preparation as four very legitimate excuses but zero is zero and I am not proud of it. What I need is a hefty dose of motivation, and tonight, drinking some very nice red wine, I found it.

With 2012 rapidly coming to an end, I’ve got thinking about races I want to do in 2013. I want to race much more than I did in 2012 but also don’t want to set random targets like 12 races or 6 half marathons just for the sake of it. Races here are expensive and I want to be picky. So I spent a very lovely evening putting together a list of races I absolutely HAVE to do and those that I would like to do as well.

Yay, I used to run once…before my bum got stuck on the sofa!

I’m always a little nervous of making plans at the start of a new year. It’s like I’m asking for some kind of disaster which would make me look sadly at my list and think how naive I was. But I also believe in planning, so here’s my plan. The races in italics are as definite as definite can be without a glimpse into the future.

Feb            Longleat 10k, Wiltshire, UK!!!! Be there!!!

March      Woodside 5m (trail), Oakland Half Marathon

April         Apple Hill Blossom Run 10k

May            A 10k to go for a PR

June          Truckee Half (as a training race), SF 2nd half (PR attempt)

July            Davis Moo-nlight Half

August        10k PR attempt, Skirt and Dirt – 10k

September  Half  Moon Bay Half, Petaluma Clo-Cow Half, Tahoe Half

October          No races

November      Big Sur half, Ramsden Turkey Trot

December      5k PR attempt, trail race – locally, Jingle Bell Hell

Let’s briefly touch on September. Basically, every half marathon I want to do is in September. I am definitely doing Half Moon Bay – it’s a PR opportunity, it’s local and two of my favourite bloggers, Liz and Bean, are doing it. I also want to run at gorgeous Lake Tahoe this year but I also want to do the Petaluma Half simply because their medal is a cow-bell and I am a sucker for all things alpine! I think realistically I pick HMB and then one other. But OH, September!

Look at all that space for future medals!
Keys, prepare to be ousted by the hardware I earn in 2013!

So who’s doing what? Anyone running any of these? What are YOUR 2013 race plans? Are you considering selling a kidney to fund them? Yeah, me too.

give yourself a break!! After all that travelling you need to let your body recover. And it’s nearly Christmas 🙂
Inspired by you I am entering the Longleat 10k. I’m also doing the Bath Half and then the London Marathon. then falling in a heap and taking the summer off! Joke. But seriously I will give myself a break from training. I will continue to run though. When I did the NYC marathon I completely lost my running mojo for a while. I entered the Bath Half which was 4 months after NY which I managed but I didn’t enjoy the training one bit. But I’m back in the groove and really enjoying the training for London now and will enjoy these two races along the way.
    Happy Christmas!

GREAT news about Longleat, so excited!! I think the Mojo is coming back – doing this post got me all excited. I just need to buy a little boy a bike and then I can tick Christmas as done and run again!
      Happy Christmas too!

Well, as you know, I’m already signed up for the Oakland Half. And I would like to run the 2nd half of the SF Half too. So that’s 2 races we have in common. How about a trail race to make it a perfect trifecta? Fancy coming over to the East Bay for one of the Triple Crown races, or maybe a race at Lake Chabot?

Yes, I do!!! Yep, let’s make it a triple!!!!! Hurrah.

If it makes you feel any better I have run like 3 miles in the last week. No let me check, not like 3, actually 3. Been sick and lazy. Racing schedule looks awesome! Is it weird I want to be your neighbor so I can run all of them with you? Yes I will be selling a body part to fund my racing, especially HMB. Though there is a blogger I know who has offered to share their space so I might be showing up on their door step to save funds;).

I would def take her up on that offer!! And I smell a run today…it’s going to happen!!!
