Last Week in my Nikes – 12th November

Before we talk running…click on this. A US army sergeant surprises his wife at the finish line of a marathon, having been away in Afghanistan for 10 months. Warning. Grab a tissue first. And a second one. It’s the sweetest thing I’ve seen for a long time.

Anyway….less weepily…

After last week’s trip to Southern California, it was rather nice to be home again. It was also nice because the clocks went back and BAM, we had light mornings again. I can run earlier…hurrah, thank you America! Our race, the Veterans’ Day Four Miler, was on Saturday and I wanted to get some good miles in.

Monday: 6 miles. I spent the whole run feeling unfit, out of shape, sluggish, slow. I reflected on how much fitness I’d lost. I resolved to start eating better, training harder…you know the feeling. And then I got home and found I’d run 6.1 miles in 53 minutes at an 8.49 pace. I find this hard to believe, I feel like something is incorrect – but a general take-out is that I’m not as unfit as I think, and that if I start eating better and training harder, all is not lost!

Wednesday: Stroller run. I had plans to run hard today. Four miles with the middle two at but-gusting effort. But the Dude had other plans. ‘I run too’, he informed me, ‘I do my exercises’. I tried to dissuade him but he was so keen that I quickly caved in. It won’t be long before he doesn’t want to hang out with his sweaty mum. So off we went. We headed over to the outdoor obstacle-course/gym course at a nearby office. About a mile and half running for me, then twenty minutes showing the Dude how to do push ups, sit ups, pull ups etc and laughing a lot, and then a mile running back. A funny little run today.

Thursday: 5.3 miles. I finally made Running Club again tonight. It was cold and dark but I’m a Brit and I laugh in the face of bad weather. Expecting rain, I layered on the waterproof mascara and my waterproof jacket but in the end it was dry. We ran through an incredibly dark residential area and I chased down the various people in front of me so as to not be left alone in strange streets! It was a good run and nice to run with other people!!

Saturday was our race, the Veterans’ Day 4 miler. But you’ll have to wait to find out how that went!

And finally…we had family photos taken whilst our family is here. And because I’m slightly vain, here are my favourites.

I love this
Next year, I reckon he’ll be up to my shoulder…
Love this so much
WHY did the world’s smiliest child not smile during the photo shoot?

  1. I seriously just cried looking at those pictures of the army husband and wife. It brought me back to when my husband got home after 12 months in Iraq. So emotional!

I love all your pictures. Very cute 🙂

Oh so cute.. great pictures.. It’s great that you let the little guy join you for your run, it’s true before long they won’t want to hang out with us anymore.

    1. Cathryn says:

Exactly. I think that so often when he wants to do stuff that slows me down!! In a few years, I will give my right arm for him to want to hang out with his old mum.

Great photos! Your husband and his brother look so much alike! They’re not twins, are they?

    1. Cathryn says:

No but they’re freakily alike, aren’t they! The Dude doesn’t stand a chance, does he!
