Running in So-Cal: Long Beach

It would be odd not to mention the election results. I want to tread carefully…I am a guest in this wonderful country and there is nothing more obnoxious than a foreigner commenting on things they don’t know much about. The thing I am (almost) MOST excited about is the passion with which people here voted. It was great to see.

But anyway. Running. Southern California.

On Thursday, we headed south to Long Beach to stay on the Queen Mary, part of my Mother in Law’s birthday present. The old Royal ship is docked there and is now a hotel. It’s a lovely ship, evocative and romantic. It’s easy to envision gorgeous people lazing around in wonderful clothes, holding gin martinis. You get a sense of history, of glamour.  Even when potty training.

I ran the next morning. It was uninspiring. The Queen Mary is parked in the docks. I found a paved trail which ran along the water’s edge for a mile and a bit. My legs felt heavy, I felt bloated (we have been eating poorly), I felt incredibly unfit and struggled along a little. The sunrise was beautiful – the run’s saving grace.

Good morning, Ma’am!

After about 2.5 miles, I got back to the ship and decided to head up to the sun deck and run round there. It was such a lovely surprise…it felt so surreal and special to be running laps around an old cruise liner. The views were beautiful, the ship itself was graceful and lovely…and then I found an old British phone box!!

Gorgeous running track, eh?
Good morning, Long Beach.
Phoning home…

Three loops later (roughly 1/2 mile) and the run was saved. Still a rubbish bit of running but a happy run.

(PS…I honestly washed my t-shirt between runs! Promise!)

  1. I feel like I’m a guest in this country too even though I’m a permanent resident. What’s odd to me is how passionate people back home are (I’m from Canada) about the election. It got heated on Facebook!

My friends in Europe were the same way, pro Obama. I hope that it’s some comfort to republican Americans to see how popular their decision is abroad and the positive feeling towards America that the results generated.

  2. Ha! I wouldn’t judge you even if you wore it dirty. I recycle jeans until they have obvious food stains.

Amazing photos the last two posts! Looks like a great time. Makes me miss California. My in-laws live in Sacramento and we always have such fun when we are in Cali. I love that shirt, I am gonna have to check out Target and see if I can find it on clearance or something.

Thanks! It was really beautiful down there but I’m glad we don’t love there. The traffic is abysmal!! Good luck on the Target hunt…I got it on clearance a while ago but they are good on the sales, Target!!!
