Going for Gold (Country)

Well, Charlie Cat got considerably better after a day and night of resting, so we abandoned him and the Husband, and  drove up to Gold Country. We stayed with some friends up there, in the dear little town of Murphys.  Their little boy is the Dude’s BFF. So we headed up on Monday morning and got back on Tuesday afternoon. I am incredibly lucky to be able to  do these things.

But on Monday morning, before we left, I was up at 5.45 and got in a run on the treadmill at my apartment gym. I totally hate treadmills but it was my only option and I am VERY focussed at the moment! The good news is that I finally worked out how to operate the light switch so I didn’t have to run in the dark this time!

Cheesy pre-run photo! CHEEEESE!

To beat boredom, I ran 6 repeats of 0.3 miles at 9.50 min pace and then 0.7 miles at 8.45 pace. Kind of interval training. I also whacked up the volume of my draft playlist for Healdsburg and without new music I don’t think I would have lasted so long! In the end, I ran 6.1 miles in a few seconds under 55 miles. Happy with that – and I was well sweaty at the end!

Unfortunately, I had worn inappropriate clothes. I knew I would get hot, so I ran in my sports bra and the tiniest shorts that I own. Temperature-wise, I got it right. But my British thighs did not appreciate the shortness of the shorts and OH MY WORD, THE CHAFING. THE CHAFING! The shower afterwards hurt!!

Good morning, sunshine!

So me, my Dude and my chafing went up to Murphys, a tiny little town chock full of wineries. We hung out in the pool, tasted some very nice reds and a delicious sparkling white, ate some great food and enjoyed some wonderful company. I took my running gear but decided to give my poor inner thighs a chance to heal up. Darn, I love running in new places. Anyway, here’s a few snaps of our not-weekend away!

And finally…BOO BOO BOO, the San Francisco Marathon didn’t choose me to be an ambassador. I was really disappointed but, thinking about it, I can think of about six good, solid, marketing reasons why I wouldn’t pick me so I understand. And I’m still very excited about running the second half next year!!! Good luck to all the people they DID choose!!

  1. It sounds like you had a fabulous visit but oh the chafing. I feel for you. Literally. Bummer about SF but hey, there is always 2012. Besides we might just be seeing each other in that second half and then I will race you to Kara’s Cupcakes afterward for a reward. 😉 Good luck in Healdsburg!

  2. Ouch! But at least you had fish tacos — because those are some of the best things on earth. The leaves turning is my favorite part of year.

Also, they are missing out in San Fran with not having you as an ambassador. Maybe they’ll wise up by next year.

Fish Tacos are one of the best things about America!! Totally agree.

Thanks ref SFM…I was disappointed but toddlers don’t let you longer on things, do they!!
