An AMAZING weekend!

Did you hear the news??

BRADLEY WIGGINS WON THE TOUR DE FRANCE!!!!

Yeah, baby!

This is the first time the UK has ever won the Tour. I may have shed the odd tear. And on Sunday, there was a party!! Everyone had to wear yellow…or dress like a French person.

Welcome to the British Yellow Jersey party!

Which means basically that an utterly fantastic 12 miler on Saturday is relegated to the back pages!!  Because on Saturday, I had a dress rehearsal for next week’s San Francisco Half marathon. I wanted to see the course and to run it, where possible. I wanted to test my planned outfit. I wanted to run the hills and gauge how I would feel.  I wanted to try out my new 3 Gu strategy. I wanted to get excited and relish the final week of training. So at 5.25 on Saturday morning I got up and at 6.21  I found myself on BART (like the Tube here) heading into the city.

Not good in the mornings

I had to alter the course a little, adding some extra miles at the end to make up 12 miles…and I didn’t run over the Bridge or back. I want to save that for next week. So I set off and ran!

Early start at the Ferry Building

It was a great run. My best long run yet. It was loads of fun – new roads, amazing views of the bridge, of Alcatraz and the foggy ocean. I ended up taking two Gus at miles 4 and 8 (next week I’ll take them at 4, 7 and 11 I think) and that really helped – I felt so much stronger at the end than in my previous long runs. I test-ran the carefully chosen playlist (more on that next week) and it was fab…a few tweaks for next week. I finished strong. I ran 12.2 miles in 1.56.34 at 9.32 pace. If I run 13.1 miles at that pace next weekend, I’ll do the half in 2.04.58 which will be faster than my Kaiser time!! I’m definitely fitter than I was in then – I feel like all the hard work has been worth it.

Alcatraz in the morning

My run ended at the playground in Golden Gate Park where I found my two boys on the swings waiting for me, and the coffee bar just opened up. Doesn’t get much better than that!! A quick stint on the carrousel and off to my favorite brunch place, Crepes on Cole, for a dress-rehearsal of next week’s French Toast feast!!

Buckwheat pancakes.

To say that I’m excited now would be an understatement!!

Also, I’ve signed up for a 5k in September!! The Firefly run. I’m running it for fun, not racing. I’m running it with one friend who’s coming back after her second baby and one amazing friend who is celebrating her 50th birthday. I know some people don’t like ‘gimmicky’ runs but this just looks like shed-loads of fun and I can’t wait. I am googling LED accessories like a mad girl!!

How much fun is this going to be?

So that was a cracker of a weekend. What did you do?

  1. Congrats to the whole UK on the win! Now I want to have a party where everyone dresses up Frenchly just because.
